Long-distance buses in Thailand

Buses connect Thai destinations that rail does not reach directly, including Chiang Rai, Phuket and Krabi. Start with the actual departure and arrival points: Bangkok’s Mo Chit 2, Southern Terminal and Ekkamai are separate, and operators can use their own offices. Compare the seat layout and baggage conditions for the selected departure; “VIP” is not a universal specification.

Choose by the whole journey, including the terminal

A bus can take you directly to a city that otherwise needs a train-and-road transfer. It is worth comparing for Chiang Rai, Phuket and Krabi, and for regional journeys such as Chiang Mai–Chiang Rai.

Compare the departure address and arrival terminal before the fare. A cheaper ticket can leave you with an extra cross-city transfer, while an operator’s own office may suit your accommodation better than the municipal terminal. For an overnight service, look at the arrival time as carefully as the departure.

Bangkok has several departure points

The Transport Co.’s directory separates the main terminals and the Chatuchak minivan terminal. The place named on your ticket matters more than a general north/south rule.

Name you may seeHow to distinguish it
Bangkok Bus Terminal Chatuchak / Mo Chit 2An intercity bus terminal, separate from BTS Mo Chit and MRT Chatuchak Park
Southern Bus Terminal / Sai Tai MaiThe terminal on Borommaratchachonnani Road; not a synonym for every southbound departure
Eastern Bus Terminal / EkkamaiA different terminal from Mo Chit 2; do not substitute one when arranging a transfer
Chatuchak minivan terminalA separate departure facility from the main coach concourse
An operator office or private terminalUse the exact address and operator instructions for that departure

The operator’s official contacts include southern-route departures from Mo Chit. Do not go to Sai Tai Mai just because your destination is in the south. Likewise, a return ticket need not use the same Bangkok terminal as the outward leg: for November 2026, The Transport Co. coaches to Phuket were sold from Mo Chit 2, while the return coaches arrived at the Southern Terminal. See Bangkok to Phuket.

Airport departures can avoid a journey into central Bangkok. AOT places Pattaya and Hua Hin coach counters at Suvarnabhumi Level 1, Gate 8, while other services use the airport’s separate Public Transportation Center. See the Suvarnabhumi guide before choosing the boarding point.

Express, VIP, van or minibus?

Read the vehicle details for the individual departure. Compare the seat map, recline, air-conditioning, toilet and any included food instead of applying one definition to every operator’s “VIP” or “Express” label.

With a large suitcase, establish the baggage allowance, storage arrangement and excess charge before choosing a van. Do not assume a small vehicle is faster or that another passenger seat is automatically included for your bag. For a coach, keep any baggage receipt until your luggage is returned.

Follow the operator’s stated reporting time and boarding instructions. If you need a stop or a particular facility, confirm it for that service before paying.

Chiang Mai–Chiang Rai: a useful terminal example

Greenbus’s route guidance gives a typical journey of three to four hours, with Chiang Mai Bus Terminal 3 (Arcade) and Chiang Rai Bus Terminal 1 for the applicable services. It directs customers to its official FairFair channel and lists advance booking up to 30 days, subject to availability.

Seats between those terminals were sold online for November 2026 from 409 THB per adult one-way for listings of 3 hr 45 min, and 621 THB for listings of 3 hr 20 min, with taxes included. These are dated online examples, not the operator’s guaranteed tariff or a definition of the seat class.

There are also departures using Chiang Rai Terminal 2. One return listing leaves Terminal 2 at 13:10 and reaches Chiang Mai Terminal 3 at 16:10. Select the terminal that suits your journey, then confirm the address on the ticket; a search for “Chiang Rai” can include more than one departure point.

Buying the right ticket and planning a connection

The Transport Co. and Greenbus provide official booking channels. Compare like for like: date, direction, operator, class, pickup, drop-off and any transfer. A through ticket should identify each included leg; a bus ticket to a ferry gateway is not automatically an island ticket.

Before payment, confirm the baggage terms, reporting time, ticket exchange requirements and change/cancellation rules. Do not assume that every overnight bus includes a meal coupon, blanket or free excess luggage.

For an onward train, ferry or flight, include the transfer from the bus stop and the next operator’s check-in deadline. Separate tickets need their own margin for road delays. Check the reverse boarding point while arranging the outward journey, rather than returning automatically to the place where you were dropped off.

Questions before you go

Are Mo Chit BTS station and Mo Chit 2 bus terminal the same place?

No. Mo Chit 2 is the intercity bus terminal; the BTS station is a separate transport point. Plan the final road connection to the actual departure terminal rather than treating a rail arrival as arrival at the coach platform.

Does every bus for southern Thailand leave from Sai Tai Mai?

No. The Transport Co. also lists contacts for southern services from Mo Chit. Use the boarding address for the selected departure, especially when comparing different operators or booking the reverse direction.

Does a VIP ticket guarantee a particular seat layout and meal?

No. Read the selected vehicle’s layout and inclusions. A class label alone does not establish the number of seats, a toilet, charging, a meal or baggage allowance. Confirm anything that will determine whether the journey works for you.
