Trains in Thailand

For a daytime rail journey, book a seat; for an overnight journey, choose an actual sleeper berth. Bangkok’s Krung Thep Aphiwat is the departure station for the Chiang Mai sleepers, while Hua Lamphong still has other services. SRT’s online terms allow booking up to 180 days ahead for eligible journeys. Phuket, Krabi and Chiang Rai need a road connection, not a direct train ticket.

Choose the train and the bed separately

An overnight train ticket can be a seat or a berth. Select the carriage description before comparing prices: “second class” alone does not tell you whether you can lie down.

CarriageWhat you reserveWhat to confirm
First-class air-conditioned sleeperA berth in a two-berth roomWhether the second berth is shared or reserved for your party
Second-class air-conditioned sleeperAn upper or lower berth in a shared carriageThe berth position and the actual train
Non-air-conditioned sleeper, where offeredA berth in the listed sleeper carriageThat the ticket says sleeper, rather than seated fan class
Seated carriageA seat for the journeyAir-conditioning/fan description and arrival time

SRT lists these as different carriage types. An air-conditioned diesel service such as Chiang Mai trains 7/8 is seated, even though it uses the same route as overnight sleepers. Choose by the journey you want, rather than by train number or “express” alone.

Find the correct Bangkok station

For Chiang Mai sleepers, select Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal as the Bangkok station when that is where you intend to board. Hua Lamphong remains a separate station with other departures; “Bangkok” in a search result is too broad to plan the transfer.

Some tickets use an intermediate stop. A service sold from Don Mueang has its own boarding time, even when the same train starts at Aphiwat. Match the station and train number on the issued ticket before arranging your ride.

From Don Mueang Airport, the Red Line connects with Aphiwat. Leave time for the walk and interchange into the intercity area. From Suvarnabhumi, the Airport Rail Link is a different line; it does not deliver you directly to an intercity sleeper platform.

Day train or overnight sleeper to Chiang Mai?

SRT’s published timetable for October 2026 gives these useful comparisons. Arrival “next day” means you need accommodation or another plan for that morning, rather than the departure night.

Direction and trainDepartureArrivalScheduled journey
Aphiwat → Chiang Mai, 707:3017:5010 hr 20 min, daytime seated service
Aphiwat → Chiang Mai, 918:4007:15 next day12 hr 35 min, sleeper service
Chiang Mai → Aphiwat, 807:3017:4010 hr 10 min, daytime seated service
Chiang Mai → Aphiwat, 1018:2006:30 next day12 hr 10 min, sleeper service

These are scheduled examples, not proof that a seat or berth remains available. Check the service and class on your travel date, including the return journey. Use the Bangkok–Chiang Mai route guide to compare the whole trip with a coach or flight.

Ticket prices and how far ahead to book

Class 3 Fan seats on train 51, Aphiwat → Chiang Mai, were sold online for November 2026 at 324 THB per adult one-way, with taxes included. A return second-class air-conditioned sleeper on train 10 was offered at 1,328 THB. These are different products: the lower seated fare does not buy a bed. Compare the same stations, date and carriage when requesting a berth quote.

SRT’s D-Ticket instructions and conditions give a maximum advance window of 180 days and an online cutoff at least three hours before departure. That maximum does not establish when every short section or train opens for sale. Search the exact station pair and date, then use SRT if the journey or class is not offered.

The official booking process requires an account. Before paying, check the passenger name, station pair, train, date, berth/seat and ticket-issue instructions. Download the issued ticket and follow its printing requirements; keep it available without mobile data.

Rail gateways for Laos and the south

The railway reaches Chiang Mai, while Chiang Rai requires onward road transport. Compare the Chiang Mai–Chiang Rai bus with a direct journey to your final destination before buying separate tickets.

On the Southern Line, Chumphon and Surat Thani are rail gateways for onward road and boat connections. Neither a train arrival nor a ticket marked “Surat Thani” establishes which ferry pier is included. Read the transfer leg and final island pier in the ferry guide. Phuket and Krabi also require a road leg.

For Laos, SRT lists international trains 133/134 to Khamsavath. Khamsavath is a separate railway arrival from the Laos–China Railway station serving onward high-speed trains. Use the Thailand–Laos border guide for the immigration and onward-transfer distinction. Do not infer a protected connection from two services appearing on the same map.

Questions before you go

Does a first-class ticket give one person a private compartment?

SRT describes first-class sleeper rooms with two berths. A reservation for one berth does not establish exclusive use of the other. Confirm the whole-compartment arrangement and price if you need the room to yourself.

Can I rely on a phone screenshot as my train ticket?

Follow the instructions supplied with the issued ticket. D-Ticket’s published conditions call for a printed ticket, so keep a printout as well as an offline copy. A reservation request or payment receipt alone is not an issued rail ticket.

Can I take a train all the way to Phuket or Chiang Rai?

Neither destination appears as a passenger station on SRT’s network. Use a road connection: compare a through bus with a train plus a separate transfer. For Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai is one possible rail gateway, not a direct rail arrival.
